Synesthesia :: Biology Medical Medicine Research
In the mornings, my feline regularly takes up a post on my chest. His essence is proclaimed by a cheerful howl and four quarter-sized purposes of weight where his feet reach; as he unwinds, he sinks into a noisy, musical murmur, and the weight of his 16 pounds is all the more uniformly conveyed over my ventral middle. In case I'm delayed to open my eyes, he connects a paw and tenderly pricks my face with his paws â⬠¹ enough to establish a connection however not do genuine harm. At the point when I do open my eyes, I see the triangles of his ears, the thick, smooth darkness of his hide and the sheen of his nose; his yellow irises are slight rings around his enlarged students in the diminish, early light. Assume I encountered those sensations up to the point of opening my eyes â⬠¹ the weight of my feline's weight and the pricks of his paws, his howling and his murmur â⬠¹ and afterward I made me fully aware of the nonattendance of any visual proof of a feline. I'd be confounded and confused, and if the material and sound-related improvements proceeded, most likely panicky. A principal modifying of how I comprehend the world would be important to represent an undetectable feline. Presently assume that whenever I heard guitar music, I neglected to see a delicate brushing sensation around my lower legs. It would not trouble me a piece. In any case, for Carol Crane, a guitar that didn't influence her lower legs may incite a similar kind of disarray and tension an undetectable feline would actuate in me. To Crane, the lower leg brushing sensation has consistently been an essential piece of guitar music, similarly as violins consistently follow up all over and trumpets on the rear of her neck. Crane has an uncommon condition called synesthesia, in which an upgrade normally apparent in one tactile methodology creates a sensation in at least one other tangible modalities. (1). Synesthesia has numerous structures â⬠¹ synesthetes may taste shapes or feel scents, for example, or see alphanumeric characters specifically hues. Synesthetic recognitions are automatic and are dependably activated by the marvels that incite them. They are additionally steady after some time for a given synesthete; that is, a genuine synesthete for whom the melodic note E creates a percept of red triangles on a field of yellow will perpetually encounter that sound that way.

Cultural and Historical Influences Found in Six Characters in Search of an Author, A Thousand Splendid Suns, and Candide - Literature Essay Samples
Every culture has certain historical events that alter the way that culture functions and appears. For much of the world, the world wars were this historical influence. Many countries had not experienced such a sudden loss in population, and for many families, it meant the sudden loss of not one, but many loved ones. Similarly, Middle Eastern countries have been plagued by religious wars for centuries; with each rising religion, or even different interpretations of religions, the people of this region are forced to assimilate and conform to the laws forced upon them by an ever evolving government. Culture altering events do not always present themselves in the form of wars, as so drastically shown by the change brought about by the Enlightenment. Though the enlightenment period had its violent points, the change was largely in the ideas and ideals held by the citizens of Europe and a tumultuous, blossoming America. The reform seen here was philosophical and political. Through the eye s of the characters in Candide, Six Characters in Search of an Author, and A Thousand Splendid Suns the effects of these events on their authors can be interpreted. Many of the effects felt by the authors of these works show how they, personally, felt the cultural and historical changes happening right before their eyes. In 1759, Candide was born. The height of the enlightenment was underway and the effects of it spanned from Europe to the westernmost expansions of the Americas. For Franà §ois-Marie Arouet, the enlightenment only encouraged her ââ¬Å"bold, witty, and rebelliousâ⬠personality (Simon 97). The influence of this revolutionary time can be found in many aspects of Candide. The first of these is the idea that ââ¬Å"everything is for the bestâ⬠(101). The concept of God as a watchmaker was sweeping over Christianity, and from this religious alteration, the idea that god has prepared ââ¬Å"this best of all possible worldsâ⬠(101) for his creations and those creations are now left to fend for themselves. Throughout the story, the plot is thickened with strife, slavery, and some of the worst conditions imaginable; however, since they live in the best conditions allowed by God, they are thankful that they are not worse off. Meeting people who are worse off than they are preven ts them from sacrilegiously questioning God any more than they do. The enlightenment also brought about the belief that education was a right and something to be shared, cherished, and obtained no matter the costs. Voltaire held this belief close to his heart to such an extent that he would smuggle his literature to be published in countries with freedom of the press. He believed that education should be full and without censorship. Similarly, in Candide, we see characters being formally taught (education with the censorship of the establishment in which is taught); this formal teaching is altered throughout Candideââ¬â¢s life through experience and testing of the philosophical ideals he was taught. Even Pangloss, who introduced the idea of ââ¬Å"the best of all possible worldsâ⬠, alters his belief in this concept once he is cast from the censorship of the Baronââ¬â¢s castle. This evolution of what is taught and what is learned shows Voltaireââ¬â¢s belief that education is both taught formally and learned through living a full life. The difference in Candideââ¬â¢s education, both formal and informal, is brought about by a shift in social class. The class system during the enlightenment was a steadfast component, one that Arouet opposed. This opposition of a change seen during a cultural revolution shows that not all citizens within a culture necessarily embrace the cultural metamorphosis. In so me aspects, this gives culture a more dynamic appearance and adds the effect of subcultures upon the population. Voltaire mocks the class system by sending his characters through all of them. From chapter to chapter, Candide and Cunà ©gonde shift from wealth to poverty, from strife to worsening strife. The turmoil seen the Enlightenment, including revolutions, political coops, and executions, is evident in every situation experienced by the characters in Candide. The story begins with a coop, is riddled with near executions, and includes a few actual executions. Arouet undoubtedly saw this tumultuous activity in his everyday life and integrated his fear of it into his works. From eighteenth century France, the influence of historical events moves to Italy during the early 1900ââ¬â¢s. Luigi Pirandello, during this time period, is in the midst of bombs, gunfire, and unimaginable death that are inescapable in the Italian theatre of World War I. The Great War took millions from Italy and threatened the loss of many more as the Italians fought to keep the Austro-Hungarians from decimating their country. This amount of loss changes the culture of a country, and even a continent, leaving behind a broken, dark view of man. World War I emerged the way most wars do: one group of people at tempted to impose their way of thought on another. The actions in Candide are not unlike the actions of the characters in Six Characters in Search of an Author. The father and stepdaughter in particularly impose their view about what the play should look like on the producer and actors to the point where they begin to fight back. The father uncontrollably yells ââ¬Å"Oh, no!â⬠as the stepdaughter ââ¬Å"bursts into laughterâ⬠(1275) at the acting they deem as intolerable. This theme of intolerance can be found in the theatre of this play and the European theatre of the war, particularly the antagonistic role Austria played. As the producer commands them to ââ¬Å"shut upâ⬠(1276), the retaliatory attitude of Italy is introduced to the play. Pirandello was undoubtedly affected by the loss of so many soldiers across the continent and in his home country. These men, uninvolved in the initial confrontation between Russia and Austria that sparked this deadly war, are seen as innocent in the eyes of Pirandello. For this rea son, the most innocent characters in the play, the little boy and little girl, ââ¬Å"donââ¬â¢t really existâ⬠(1279). Like the ghosts of soldiers lost to their families, the children cling to their mother and their memory ââ¬Å"[helps] to keep [her] grief aliveâ⬠(1279). To heighten this grief, many of Italyââ¬â¢s attempts to defend their borders were futile in the face of the mighty army held by the Central Powers. This futility is mirrored in the battle that the characters face to have their story told correctly and even told at all. The theme of war continues on to the late twentieth century in Afghanistan where religious wars and oppression became everyday life to most families. Much of the loss seen in Six Characters in Search of an Author is also experienced by Mariam, a bright-eyed young Afghani girl, living in an environment where there seems to be ââ¬Å"one invader after anotherâ⬠(Hosseini 78). Her story, along with the story of her family and those closest to her, is told in A Thousand Splendid Suns. Constant war and shifts in political power create a dynamic setting where womenââ¬â¢s rights are dictated by the government and enforced by husbands. According to Rasheed, it is ââ¬Å"a matter of lawâ⬠and ââ¬Å"[his] responsibilityâ⬠to use her as his personal maid and slave (136). A woman is taught to ââ¬Å"quietly endure all that falls upon [her]â⬠(49). The oppression of mothers, daughters, and friends seen by Khaled Hosseini during his time in Afghanistan adds a feminist flair to his writing and could contribute to his main characters being female. The destruction caused by bombs, bullets, and so called freedom fighters is echoed in the emotional state of Hosseiniââ¬â¢s characters. He acknowledges that ââ¬Å"every afghan story is marked by death . . . and imaginable griefâ⬠(203). Mariamââ¬â¢s mother is plagued by a mental illness forced upon her by society; in this way, her society kills her with its oppression. Treated like a piece of property to be sold to a business man and a toy for him to play with and discard, Mariamââ¬â¢s emotional war has many sides to it. The loss of her mother and, symbolically her father, lead her to crave the family she knows she will never have with Rasheed. Her miscarriages lead her to resent herself because it is her fault this ideal family she pictures will never be a reality. She is bombarded by the echoes of her mother calling her Harami, and she begins to believe that she is, in fact, ââ¬Å"an illegiti mate person who [will] never have [a] legitimate claim to the things other people had, things such as love, family, home, acceptanceâ⬠(1). This self-loathing is furthered by the entrance of Laila into their family. Mariam is replaced, left to tend to the wife she could never be. No sooner can she bond with Laila, they are stripped away from her and she is left to the same fate as her mother: choosing a death she deems herself worthy of. These women are a product of the land they call home, a land Hosseini called home and brought to the rest of the world through his experience and writing. Hosseini teaches his readers that emotional wars can cause deaths more effectively than any missile; most of these deaths, however, are not of the body, but of the soul. The religious aspect of the war in Afghanistan is also experienced at the personal level for Mariam. The war they are surrounded by, oppressed by, killed by, is in the name of God. Yet, to ease the pain and grant them hope, they pray this same God. The characters of this story use their religion to escape their religion. This loving creator who cares so deeply for his creations also believes that women should have fewer rights, serve their husband, and die if they choose to do otherwise. The irony is tangible. Every character has a piece of reality within them placed there by authors who are so affected by the events they have endured, that they cannot separate their writing from their ever-present reality. From war, to religion, to societal movements, and back to war again, authors carry the burden of these life-altering events; they lessen this load through writing, each character taking a piece of their creators hurt, strife, and truth with them. Similarly, the common struggles between reader, author, and character allow the reader to lessen their burdens into the literature with the assurance that they are not the only ones suffering. Every reader suffers loss, physical and emotional wars, and religious confusion not unlike those illustrated in the literary works discussed previously. In shared grief and suffering, there is solace, whether it is shared by author and character or reader and character. Works Cited Hosseini, Khaled. A Thousand Splendid Suns. How Entrepreneurs Can Make a Splash in the Middle of an Ocean of Content If you are an entrepreneur like I am and are honest with yourself, you will admit that making a big splash with your content is nowhere near as easy as it used to be. A few years ago you could write top 10 lists and other types of shallow content (often referred to as link bait) that would bring some traffic to your site by reaching out to influential bloggers and through sites like StumbleUpon, Delicious and Digg. Well, a lot has changed since then, specifically the following: 1. Readers are much more skeptical and frankly pretty tired of link bait, top 10 lists and other types of content that really only exist to try to trick you into visiting yet another affiliate marketing site. Itââ¬â¢s just a cheap and all-too-easy way to drive traffic. Even if it miraculously does still work, it most likely will not result in you converting that traffic into loyal customers that respect your brand. If your marketing team is telling you this is the way to go, you really need to get a new team. 2. Given many of the recent updates to Googleââ¬â¢s algorithm, particularly the panda update, you have to be really careful that the content you are producing is providing value to users. Specifically, the keywords that you may be targeting with that content should be accurate, related to your area of expertise and provide answers that users may not be able to get anywhere else. That simply means that your content should beShow MoreRelatedPepsico17216 Words à |à 69 PagesTable of Contents Abstract | 2 | Phase One | | I. Background | 3 | II. Vision | 6 | III. Mission | 6 | IV. Effective Business Communication and Chalanges â⬠Free Samples
Question: Discuss about the Effective Business Communication Chalanges. Answer: Diagnosis and Reflection The diagnostic tools are important determinants of exploring the personal capability of the communication process effectiveness (Davenport, 2013). The set of five diagnostic tools would be used to determine my communication style and identify any short comings. A combination of tools has been used for this purpose namely Assertive Questionnaire, Johari Window, Communication Style Questionnaire, Non-Verbal test and Listening Test. I am confident that these tools would help me to identify my communication style, which would help me to face professional world with confidence. I have performed the analysis and found out that I have passive aggressive behavior and average level of patience. I am sure that I display passive assertive behavior from the answers of the assertive questionnaire and communication style behavior. I am confident that I have displayed passive behavior in the past. This is because of the fact that I have the tendency of giving more importance to others judgment. In this process, I often neglect my own views. There are instances when I am too embarrassed to share my own views in front others as I feel the need to be dejected. I feel that my viewpoint may be wrong and hence I refrain from making a statement in public, especially when I am with a group of people. I also suffer from lack of confidence at times and I am unable to put my opposing views. However, I keep thinking about the untold points in my own minds, which even lower my self-esteem and increases my stress levels. I have faced such incidents frequently. I have maximum probl ems in this regard when I am in a group. The group can be a professional group or a personal one. But, I have found out that I am not able to put my opinion before others successfully. This has made me bad speaker as the other members often think that I do not have sufficient contributions. I feel bad in such situations when I think I would be able to say lot of things on the topic but actually fail to do so. When I am interacting with people in my daily life, I often feel the urge of speaking up my mind and sometimes I am successful in doing so. However, there are instances when I am unable to comment appropriately which makes my anxious. I always appreciate others but I am not able to comment about my achievements. This is the evidence that I display passive behavior. There are also personal evidences which show that I display aggressive behavior at certain point of time. There are instances when I behave rudely as well as strangely in public. After the incident, I often regret my behavior and feel sorry about myself. There are instances when I engage in critical thinking on simple matters which make me react weirdly. There are instances when I have made sarcastic comments and this have offended people, who have reduced their communication with me. I react all of sudden without thinking, for which I am ashamed of. If I heard any negative comments about myself, I react out of an instance and this has created issues in my life. I have related criticisms with aggressive behavior. This aggressive behavior has distanced me from my close relations. I have also engaged in cold war with my office colleagues due to this behavior. I have understood the fact that I have tendencies to display average levels of patience. I am neither too patient nor impatient when dealing with others. In my personal as well as professional lives, I strive to be patient; however, there are times when I am unable to do so. Patience is one of the most important ingredients for achieving success in life (Moran, Abramson Moran, 2014). I have found out about this communication imparity of mine from the active listening skills test that I have taken in this assessment. This is especially true when I am expecting something. I am unable to keep my cool and I become anxious, which I cant express to others. I have also faced this issue when I was in my academic life. I was unable to concentrate on the lectures for longer duration and became impatient. I deviated from the topic and I used to think about something else. This often prevented me from focusing on the topic and I did not have a clue about the subject that is being taught. This a ffected my academic grades and I am afraid that this trait would also affect me in my professional life. I have always felt that I am not very patient when I interact with people from different backgrounds as I am not very familiar with them. This often disrupts the interpersonal relationships, which is not desirable. I have felt that I possess the identified communication challenges in two professional instances. I was attending a board meeting when my colleague made a personal attack on me. I was unable to keep my cool and I reacted in a rather aggressive manner. This reduced the impact of my viewpoint and people started sympathizing on me. I have realized that I should have tackled the situation in a calm or composed manner and give the person an appropriate answer. In the second instance, when my supervisor was sharing some details with me, I somehow lost my concentration level as I lost my patience level. I started to look at my mobile which made my supervisor scold me a lot. This incident arises due to the lack of patience in me. I was confident that I do possess the communication challenges that were detected in the diagnostic test. In the first instance, I was unable to refrain my temperament, which made me to display aggressive behavior. I realized that such behavior is not good for my professional career. I have average patient level which made me to display poor listening skills when I was interacting with my boss. This made my impression bad. I realize that I need to develop myself so that I can get rid of these two communication challenges. Literature Review According to Wang (2016), the patience level can be defined as the capacity to accept or delay the process of suffering without becoming anxious. It can be compared to a state of fortitude where the person would be able to remain composed even in difficult circumstances. This factor is tested when the individuals are provoked for some or the other reasons. In the studies of psychology, patience is associated with decision making in which there is involvement of the small reward or long reward in the short term or long term respectively (Ahmadi, Nami Barvarz, 2014). The world religions have placed enormous interest and emphasized on practicing patience. There are several benefits of being a patient person (Mearns, Thorne McLeod, 2013). Patient people are able to keep their calm even in adverse situation. This ensures that they do have high levels of mental health (Moran, Abramson Moran, 2014). They have the power of feeling more gratitude and hence they can be more connected to the mankind. They have the feelings of greater sense of abundance. The act of patience improves the employee performance in a professional environment (Hyland, Lee Mills, 2015). The equitable, empathetic and cooperative nature of people enhances their productivity. The degree of patience helps the individuals to achieve their goals (Ahmadi, Nami Barvarz, 2014). They would be able to see the results instantly. The act of patience is synonymous with good health as this attribute relaxes their mind. It also reduces the stress levels of the individuals and hence they enjoy optimum mental health. According to Seligman and Csikszentmihaly (2014), the psychological study of patience revealed that the patience is essentially related with the optimal human functioning. It is considered as the tendency to be restrained, deliberate and is able to endure the given set of difficulties. This study distinguishes between the patience as well as the impulse, delay of gratitude, procrastination and control (Ahmadi, Nami Barvarz, 2014). Patience has shown overlapping with the other character strengths of the individuals. There is strong interconnection between the self-regulation, open mindedness and persistence (Corral-Verdugo, Tapia-Fonllem Ortiz-Valdez, 2015). Evidences shows that there is an indirect relationship between patience with depression and direct proportion with the patience with negative health outcomes (Comer Sekerka, 2014). There have also been evidences that show that the self-control is strong parameters of patience which predicted better grades, higher self-esteem an d less psychopathology. The passive-aggressive behavior is considered to be synonymous with the expression if hostility, stubbornness, procrastination, sullen behavior and others that prevent the accomplishment of the requested task (Lewis, 2017). It is also considered as a pervasive standard of the negative attitude as well as passive resistance to the various demands which are expected for better performance in occupational and social situations. As opined by Norman et al. (2015), the passive aggressive behavior is directly related with the malicious compliance, which is concerned with the veiling of the intent of not doing something in the path of performing the particular tasks in such a manner in which there is possibility of unwanted results (Comer Sekerka, 2014). This affects the productivity of the employees in an organizational scenario. This often results in the fact that the individuals are afraid to perform specific tasks so fearing that an unwanted outcome is achieved (Hosie et al., 2014). Acc ording to McKenzie and Twose (2015), the conflict theory is considered with the fact that the passive-aggressive kind of behavior is able to resemble a particular behavior that is described as active and deliberate. It is important to prevent the negative attributes of the passive aggressive behavior and practice great degree of patience. It is important to consider practicing behavioral skills which should be used to improve the different negative traits of the behavior. I have understood the fact that I need to acquire some important skills so that I am able to handle my two communication lags in a better way. I should have high degrees of patience and I should refrain from displaying aggressive behavior. I should practice deep breathing exercises that foster my patience level. I should try to be calmer and composed in situations. It is important that I practice managing my own emotions. I should also focus on practicing active listening as well as empathetic listening. I must join a stress management class. I should slow down myself in thinking and giving reaction. I should practice delaying the gratification process. It is important that I should try to think more before I actually start spe aking. This would prevent me to avoid situations in which I have said something wrong without pondering upon the consequences. Evidence shows that having patience level results in better decision making (Tschannen-Moran, 2014). It also helps in compassion, understanding and empathy, which is important in professional atmosphere. I should take active steps in dealing with the passive-aggressive behavior. It is important that I properly understand the situations in which I am displaying this kind of behavior. I should start to maintain a behavior journal so that I can write down the instances and frequency I have displayed passive aggressive behavior. I should be honest at this place as it would help in controlling the number of times I display such behaviors. I should also try to identify the irrational thoughts which are triggered by some stressful instances. I should also know the stages of the passive aggressive behavior so that I can deal with it effectively. It is important that I devise suitable strategies to deal with these kinds of situations in the future. I should also try to identify instances in which I have displayed passive-aggressive behavior. I should also try to identify the patterns in which the behavior is manifested in me and hampering my professional life. I should also record the informa tion that has happened. I should also try to analyze the reactions of the passive-aggressiveness behavior during these incidents. The identification of behavioral patterns is also important (Montano Kasprzyk, 2015). I should also try to make more self-awareness so that I can get rid of the negative feelings in the long run. The self-evaluation should be done which would help in the determination of the actual progress. After the 6th month of the implementation of the action plan, the above tests should be taken again so that there can be evaluation of the present skills. Any improvements made by the implementation of the communication plan can be determined. It would also help in understanding of the degree of self-improvement. I should check if I am able to control my patience level and aggressive behavioral attributes. I should check these attributes in both the personal as well as professional lives. I should also analyze the degree of changes that is inherent in me. I should also engage in taking feedbacks from my supervisors so that I can understand the level of improvement of my overall communication style. It would also give me the current scenario of my communication skills, which I can us e in the future interview process or include in my resume. References Ahmadi, S., Nami, Y., Barvarz, R. (2014).
